Dude, I got a Dell

QuickImage Category Reviews

As my main development machine is getting a little long in the tooth (5 year old Dell Dimension XPS T800r), I decided it was time to order a new machine. I ordered it the week before Thanksgiving, and it arrived on Monday.

As I was really busy dealing with some family stuff, I didn't get a chance to unpack the new machine until today. For the uber-geek that is my inner self, Christmas came early!

Here are the details:

  • Dell Dimension 8400
  • P4 540 (3.2GHz) w/HT Technology and 1MB cache
  • 1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
  • 19 inch Flat Panel display
  • 128MB PCI Express (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon X300 SE video
  • 80GB Serial ATA HDD
  • 16x DVD ROM
  • MS Windows XP Pro (with media)
  • Intel Pro 1G Integrated NIC
  • and of course, the free Dell color printer

Granted, the video isn't top of the line, but I'm not planning on doing any graphics or game development with this machine. (yet). This machine should last me for quite a while. How much did it cost you ask? LOL. How does $1178 total, including taxes and shipping sound?

Of course, the very first thing I installed on the new box was Firefox Get Firefox! (as of right now, that is the only thing I have installed so far).

Woohoo! I am a very happy camper!

In case you are wondering what is going to happen to the old computer (P3 /850, 512MB RAM, 80G HDD), it is going to become my LAMP box. I've been wanting to work with Linux for quite some time, and considering what is happening at work right now, I figure I better get some LAMP experience ASAP. I bought a couple of books Red Hat Linux Fedora All-In-One Desk Reference for Dummies (Naba Barkakati) and SAMS Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache in 24 Hours to get me started, we'll see how it goes.
