McCain declares candidacy

POLITICAL PARODY
New York City - October 23, 2007

During an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central) last evening, retired U.S. Senator John McCain (R, AZ) announced his intention to run for the Republican nomination for President in 2008. Jon Stewart, the host of the show, appeared both stunned and thrilled at the surprise announcement.

McCain has served as both a member of the Arizona House of Representatives from 1982 through 1986, when he was elected to fill the seat of (then) retiring U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater. McCain previously ran for the nomination in 2000. Unlike Goldwater in 1968, McCain did not win the nomination. He then returned to the senate where he (until his retirement last year) championed several causes, including campaign finance reform.

During the interview, Stewart pointed out the 2000 loss and the apparent snubs dealt to McCain since, and jokingly referred to McCain as an "Ornery SOB". McCain (who has been a regular guest on the show since the 2004 election campaigns) smiled back while retorting "it's ok to be an ornery SOB, as long as you're honest about it".

When questioned by Stewart about his reputation for being "hard to get along with", McCain answered that the only people who he can't seem to get along with are "mule-headed politicians, everybody else seems ok."

Neither President Bush nor RNC Chairman Jo Ann Davidson has been available for comment.
