Eragon

99 minutes of agony

There are so many bad things to say about Eragon that I don't even know where to begin. I saw this on opening night. The theatre was filled with expectant fans; all of us excited to see a great epic movie. Less than 90 seconds into the film, I realized that we had all made a huge mistake. Twenty minutes in I thought to myself "well, it can't get any worse". I was wrong about that too.

Before the movie ended at least half of the audience had walked out; the rest of us were openly guffawing and mocking the film.

Dragons! Dragons are always cool! How can you screw up a movie about dragons? Here is the recipe: Get a handful of unknown actors, and spice lightly with an excellent, talented, and respected few. Throw in a script written by a 12 year old Manga fan. Hire a director unschooled in literature, acting, or,.....oh hell, it doesn't matter at this point, just make sure your director has an unhealthy liking of Calvin Klein advertisements. Now try to fix the whole mess with several million dollars worth of CGI effects.

The movie Eragon is what is known as a career-killer. Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich will still be able to find work; but only because they both have an extensive body of excellent work behind them. Djimon Hounsou needs to fire his agent; his character was a sad caricature, he should have passed on this role. Rachel Weisz shouldn't be too hurt simply because she wasn't seen in the film (her voice work was excellent, and perhaps is the only redeeming thing about this waste of time). Other than these four, I seriously doubt that anybody involved in this film will ever be asked to work in the motion picture industry again. It was that bad.

I predict a new word will soon be added to the movie industry lexicon.

    Eragon \air-uh-GON; air-A-gawn\, verb.

  1. Reproducing or recreating in a new medium a known, loved, or respected piece of work in an unflattering or shoddy manner:
"Did you hear that Ice Capades is going to eragon On the Waterfront?"
  2. Wasting of talent, resources, money, or time:
"Hiring Jack Nicholson to do OSHA films sounds fun, but it would eragon both his time and our budget."
  3. To make a gross or stupid mistake, esp. through carelessness or mental confusion:
"I hope Britney doesn't eragon again and forget to put on underpants."
  4. To reduce to ruin, devastate, destroy, injure irretrievably, shatter, or lay waste to (a thing):
"Michael Richards may very well have eragoned his career."

The producers of Eragon obviously failed to make their saving throw vs. stupidity.

Gravatar Image1 - Thanks for saving me a lot of $! Though I think Zach will still want to see it...

most impressed with your new definitions of 'eragon'

Hey, how 'bout you go see "Night at the Museum" so I know if that's worth the bundle of money it costs to take our family to the movies.

Gravatar Image2 - It's really that bad??? Man, that kind of sucks...
Well, [sniff, sniff] I'll see it anyway. the book was great, so it should have SOME impressive parts... the game looks cool...
FIGHT THE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gravatar Image3 - Thanks 4 posting your own review 'cause I never ever thought it looked good. And if it wasn't 4 you I probably would have died in that theater! Your my hero! I can't belive Zack still wants to see it!

Gravatar Image4 - Thanks for saving me from that one, my friend. I thought the preview looked dangerously lame, but I sort of thought, well, "Dragons!" Now I know better...

Gravatar Image5 - @Rob - Anything I can do to help save another the pain.....

@Missy - I'll post my thoughts on that as soon as we see it.

@Zack - I know the book was good. Trust me on this though, the movie is terrible. If you must see it, my advice is to wait 2 month and rent the dvd.

@Chacey - I love you too sweetie.

Gravatar Image6 - Don't hold back... tell us how you really feel...

Thanks for the heads-up!

Gravatar Image7 - That's sad! I'm sure my nephew will still want to see it. How about the game? Have you checked it out? He wanted it for Christmas, I didn't get it for him. I might for his birthday next month if it's worth it. Of course, he WANTS book 3! *laugh*

Gravatar Image8 - I couldn't agree more, I hated it and I didn't even read the books.
It was nothng more than a tired mash of ideas from elsewhere ...

A bad guy that can choke people by just bending his fingers- Star Wars
Elves and Other assorted human like critters (that they didn't even bother to wardrobe)- Lord of the Rings
Grand medieval battles - also Lord of the Rings
Telepatic dragons - Anne McAffrey's Pern
Friendly talking dragon with a link to ia human- Sean Connery voiced that a while back, can't remember the name of the movie

I could go on and on ...

Is there anything even slightly original here? NO!

My twelve year old, who loved the books, was traumatized. She was so looking forward to this film but spent the entire time pointing out how wrong it was.

I wish I'd have read your review sooner, if nothing else just to brace her a bit.

Gravatar Image9 - Yes, please let us know what you think of "Night at the Museum", I don't want to be a looser twice in a row!

Gravatar Image10 - @Andrew: IIRC the Sean Connery film was called Dragonheart; although I don't see him on the IMDB credits.

I'm not sure when we are going to see "Night at the Museum" -we've signed up with a special promotion being put on by a museum here in Grand Rapids, and I'm not sure of the date. The promotion is pretty cool though -it starts off with a flashlight tour of the museum (at night, of course), and finishes up at the local theatre for a showing of the movie. Even if it (the movie) stinks, I still think I'm going to enjoy the evening.

Looking forward to seeing you at the 'Sphere my friend!

Gravatar Image11 - My daughter had been counting down the weeks, days and minutes till the opening. She loved the book and loved the movie. But for me, I am not sure if i was thrown off by the bad acting, the bad writing, the unoriginality, or the horribly uneven cinematography.

And I absolutely hated Night at the Museum (same for the kids).

Gravatar Image12 - LOL Well, I guess there's no accounting for taste

(Looking forward to Karaoke!)
