Well done, good and faithful servant

A hero passed away tonight.

Leonard Hoehn was a humble, quiet, hard working man. He grew up as a Minnesota farm boy, joined the US Army at 17, and served in World War II. He returned a hero of the Battle of Ardennes, the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp, and the occupation of Berlin.

After the war, he came home to the family farm, where he lived until he got married. This summer (August) marked their 54th anniversary. I can't really say they celebrated it, considering he has been trapped inside a slowly failing body since his stroke last December.

Over the course of their marriage, Leonard worked as a mechanic and engine delivery man, a travelling salesman, and owned several businesses. Along the way he and Laurine managed to raise four wonderful daughters, one of whom just happens to be my wife.

I've known Leonard for over 20 years now. During this time I've come to truly love and admire him. Like I said, he was a humble, quiet, hard working man. He was, and is, a hero.

I'm going to miss him.

-Devin

Gravatar Image6 - Devin and Tanya, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. He sounds like a wonderful worldly man who could probably offer great advice on just about everything from his own personal firsthand experience. What a fulfilling life! And of course, he gave you Tanya and your own happy life, which is probably the sweetest thing a father could ever see. After reading this, I went and re-read the comments others had left when I posted about my father recently; I now am in their place when they wrote their responses. Sure enough, as most of them wrote, I am always thinking of him, more than ever, and I really do miss him. One day you'll go back and re-read what you wrote, and read these comments, and smile, remembering him all over again.
